Students in 10th, 11th and 12th grade can participate in the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy, April 24th through April 28th. Students who want to develop strong leadership and team building skills should apply. See Ms. Krejce in the CRC for an application.

Financial Aid Night is coming up on Thursday, February 12th from 6 to 8 pm in the library. Students will learn how to apply for financial aid, understand college costs, and get information on student loans. This is a free event for seniors planning to attend post-secondary schools. Tonight at 7 the Central Girls Basketball team takes on the Como Park Cougars at Como Park. The girls have won 67 straight conference games tying them with Cretin-Derham Hall for the consecutive conference winning streak. A victory tonight would break the record.

The 2nd ranked Central wrestling team suffered a heart breaking loss to the 1st ranked Harding Knights last night at Harding high school. Although the boys lost there were some highlights including sophomores Ian Hedstrom and Jerome Paul winning their matches fall. Hinok Yacob and Tom Kreisman also won their matches. The boys have a non-conference game tomorrow at South Saint Paul.

Yesterday 250 seniors took part in Senior snow tubing at Eko Bakken. Right after advisory seniors met in the cafeteria all bundled up and ready to go. Seniors had fun sliding and bumping their way down the hill. The cold was made bareable by all the cups of creamy hot chocolate. The groan was audible when seniors realized it was time to go. Last weekend the Central debate team took 2nd place in the Minnesota state tournament. Last Night Central's wrestling teams practice was led by Dan Chandler, an Olympian in the 1984 Olympics and was also the coach of the 2004 Olympic wrestling team. Chandler demonstrated both technique and conditioning drills to the team. The wrestlers have a chance to take the lead in the conference with a win over Harding on Thursday at 7 pm at Harding.

Yesterday in the Auditorium the annual Martin Luther King Jr. day celebration took place. It opened with the black national anthem led by students from Harvest prep. The Youth Rally featured Tish Jones as the emcee, with a welcome from Mary Mackbee. There were performances from the art of dance, Nigerian dancers, and the Danza mexica cuauhtemoc dancers.There were prayers from Darryl Sledge and the Masjid Annur Mosque youth, and a poem performed by Tameishey Brown and Morian Collins. But, the main attraction was the keynote speaker Jeremiah Ellis with a wonderful speech about education.

After the rally, The annual Martin Luther King Day March took place. Rayford Johnson led over 2000 people in a march down Marshall Avenue from Central High School to Concordia University. The march included singing of well known civil rights songs such as "Wade In the Water." Many Central students and staff also marched.

(VID)Members of the St. Paul paramedic and fire department visted Central yesterday, and shared some information about what its like to be a fire fighter or paramedic to students. They shared the postivies, (pause) and the negatives. (pause) They shared where you would live, the equipment you would wear, who might be cooking your meals, and what you would be doing during an early morning emergency call. They explained that being a fire fighter is a serious job, with excitiment and danger.

On Monday Central will host a Martin Luther King Jr. rally from 9:30 to 10:30 am. The rally kicks off with student and young adult speakers plus musical and dance performances in the auditorium. After the rally, the group will form on Lexington Ave. and march from Central High to Concordia University at 10:35.

The Central Wrestling team defeated Highland Park last night 63-18. Winning wrestlers for Central include Ian Hedstrom, Cheng Hang, John Weber, Joe Vang, Hinok Yacob, Olumide Ige, Adrian Wood, Jerome Paul, Henry Petterson, Phil Desroches, and Sam Hansen. Central is currently in 2nd place in the conference with a record of 3-1.

There are 25 questions in these 75 minute multiple choice exams which test high school mathematics concepts. The questions range from very easy to extremely difficult. (Vid) Last night, Central's girl's gymnastics team took on a great meet against the Johnson governors. The meet consisted of Vault, Bars, Beam and Floor.
After all the hard work Central won the meet 118 to 103. The story of the night was all around winner Emma Burgeson. The Central junior lead all score with 31.875. The girl's next game is against Highland at Highland on January 23rd at 6:30.

Last Friday night Central's Girl's Basketball team crushed the Harding Knights 57 to 11. High scorers of the game were Seniors Bitty Johnson with 16 points and Theairra Taylor with 13 points. The Minutemaids had an impressive lead the first half with a score of 38 to 1. The next game will be this Tuesday, aganst the Johnson Governers here at Cental at 7, see you there!

Some of the Minuteman earning Victories were Sam Hansen, Aaron Johnson, and Phillipe Desroches. Congratulations to Sam Hansen for his 50th career win. The boys travel to Brooklyn Center tomorrow for an invitational. Their next Conference meet is against Highland Park next Thursday.

On Friday December 19th, Central's Fresh Force held it's Feed The Need banquet. Over 200 people attended and it was a huge success. Many people were entertained by singing, dancing, music and good food. About 500 hundred was raised to donate to a local family.

Over the winter break the Girls Basketball team had plenty of action playing in a tournament and a non conference game. The girls started the break off with a nail biting 2 point win over high ranked New Prague. However as break went on the girls got in a funk while competing in the Hopkins tournament. The team lost its first game to Eden Prairie 88-73. The next day the girls bounced back to defeat Grand Rapids 78-62, however they lost their final game of the break to Eastview 76-65. The girls will look to recover from these losses when they kick off Conference play against Humboldt tomorrow and look to revenge their lost to Eden Prairie when they play them on Saturday.

(PIC) Congratulations to Girls Basketball Coach Willie Taylor for recieving the 2008 Pioneer Press Sports Figure of the year. Mr. Taylor finished 7th last year but his 2nd straight state championship impressed the Pioneer Press sports writers.. This is a great honor for Willie as he beat out Tubby Smith and Joe Mauer.

Over break, the boy's basketball team beat Minneapolis North December 20th, with a final score of 64 to 52. They also played in the Milwaukee showcase, losing to Peaukee Wisconsin 54 to 50 and Whitefish Bay Dominican 57 to 50. The team also entered the Fridley tournament, beating Minneapolis Henry 80 to 77 and Minneapolis South 69 to 55. Their next game is Friday January 9th against Minneapolis Southwest.

The boys hockey team put up a brave fight but lost 4-1 at the Chisago Lakes Tournament on the 3rd. Come and support them at Blake tomorrow at 7:30 against Blake.
